About Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy is considered both an art and a science, with an origin in herbal medicine and religious ceremonies from many cultures around the world, namely China, India, and Egypt. In these ancient cultures, many beliefs of effectiveness of aromatherapy stemmed from anecdotal evidence passed down between practitioners over the generations. However, over the past 200 years with advances in medicines and scientific studies there is an ever-increasing body of research which evidences and substantiates the health benefits of aromatherapy and the use of essential oils and their varied methods of application.

The principles of aromatherapy are used in everyday products which you may not even be aware of. A simple example of this is bath or shower products. Their various scents are intended to help us feel energised for the day, sleepy for the night or reduce muscle tension after exercise. The scents used in these products may be synthetic (or natural dependent on product), but the manufacturers choice of aroma is still based on the aromatic properties of essential oils and other plant extracts. Perfumes and aftershaves work on the same principle, many use a mix of essential oils and synthetic scents to create the desired aroma.

Why Choose a Custom Blend?

Pre-blended aromatherapy products are easily available. However, they use only the most common of essential oils which are not always the best choice for the individual.

A tailored blend from a trained aromatherapist expands the choice of ingredients to include more potent essential oils which have better effectiveness for their particular conditions. These more potent oils are not suitable for all people and have potential contra-indications, hence the need for a reputable aromatherapist to assess the client and create a safe blend.
